Now is a good time to consider rituals for letting go of negativity, as we release the old year to make way for the new.
Think about what has been negative in your life in the past year.
Have you had a problem in a relationship? Think about how you have been getting on with members of your family, your friends or work colleagues.
Has something been holding you back? Are you filled with fears, self-doubt, anger or resentment? Are you carrying a grudge?
Now is the time to consider what you no longer need in your life, be it a person, a habit or an aspect of your lifestyle.
Acknowledgement and transferral
Acknowledge what you want to release and think about the different rituals for letting go that might be helpful.
Once you have identified what you need to let go, think about a process or even an object to which you can transfer this negative energy.
Many people find it really effective to write down what you want to get rid of, be it thoughts, emotions, a habit or a relationship. Others draw or paint a picture that depicts the negativity. You might make a collage of images or photos.

Perhaps you would prefer to use something from nature, such as a leaf, a stick, a feather, petals or even a stone. If you choose a natural object you should ask it if it is willing to receive the negative energy that you wish to transfer.
Focus on the object and consciously transfer the unwanted feeling or idea into it. Some people find that it helps to blow onto the object, as if your breath is carrying the negative out of your body and into something else.
Relinquishment
Now decide which of the elements you will use in the physical act of surrendering.
Many people are drawn to fire. This requires careful planning in order to use the element safely. Will you build a small fire or light a candle? You will need a fireproof container if you set alight the item. As you watch it burn, say to yourself “It is over, it has past, it has gone.” Consciously let it go.
You may throw the item into water, whether it is a stream or river or lake, dam or the sea. Again, willingly and verbally let go of what you have transferred into the object.
If you want to use air, you can go to a high place and throw the object into the air or you may blow it off your hand if it is light.
You can ask the earth to receive it by burying it.
You could use more than one element. So you could burn the item and then bury the ashes or sprinkle them over water.

Once you have released the negative you can give thanks and think of new opportunities that you will welcome into your space.
You might want to have a special meal to celebrate your allowing yourself to move on.
